About Us

Welcome to YMCA Athlone, a community-rooted organization inspired by the global YMCA movement, which began in London in 1844. Guided by the enduring principle of holistic development in spirit, mind, and body, YMCA Athlone continues to evolve while staying true to its foundational purpose: empowering individuals and strengthening communities.

Our Global Roots

Sir George Williams by John Collier

The YMCA movement was founded on 6 June 1844 by Sir George Williams, a young London dry goods clerk.Deeply moved by the social struggles of the time, Williams envisioned a space where young men could grow spiritually, mentally, and physically.

His efforts laid the foundation for what became a worldwide movement. Recognized for its humanitarian work during wartime and its support for urban youth during the Industrial Revolution, the YMCA expanded rapidly. In 1855, the first World YMCA Conference was held, leading to the formation of the World Alliance of YMCAs. The organization’s emblem—the triangle—symbolizes balanced development of body, mind, and spirit.

Our Local Legacy

YMCA Athlone traces its origins to 11 July 1914 when it was established under the Cape Town YMCA as the Stakesby Lewis Hostels in District Six. This safe and welcoming space served young Coloured and African men during a time of social injustice and segregation. In 1937, the first dedicated hostel for Coloured youth opened at the corner of Canterbury and Commercial Streets.

However, apartheid’s Group Areas Act forced the closure of the District Six site on 31 December 1981. In 1982, YMCA Athlone was re-established on newly acquired land in Athlone, continuing its legacy of service amid challenging times.

Our Mission

YMCA Athlone remains anchored in the global Paris Basis, seeking to unite people of all backgrounds in Christian service and community development. While our early work focused on young men, we now proudly serve women, children, and families, expanding our outreach and inclusivity.

  • Our Local Mission: The YMCA Athlone will empower young people and our communities to build a just, sustainable, equitable and inclusive society, where every person can thrive in body, mind and spirit.

Our Vision

YMCA Athlone is progressive in outlook, solid in service, and relevant in action. From our roots in District Six to our vibrant home in Athlone, we remain committed to nurturing the potential in every person we serve. Our programs are designed to create lasting, positive change for individuals and the broader community.

  • Our Local Vision: A world where every person lives in harmony with self, with society and with creation.
